比起登嘉楼其他华人聚落，没有一个聚落比登嘉楼河口的唐人坡更具有社会和历史意义。早年中国海上贸易活动延伸至东南亚岛屿地区，遂逐渐发展了这聚落。众多早期中国历史记载多次提及登嘉楼，就是明证。然而基于某些原因，这些记载并没有提及登嘉楼出现华人聚落一事。直至十八世纪，欧洲贸易商在登嘉楼港口交易，方才记述了瓜拉登嘉楼港口有一个华人聚落。登嘉楼港口在当时已经是国际贸易港，华人亦在这里积极经商。到了十九世纪，唐人坡发展完好定型了。细看拓荒先辈出身背景和其他证据，这个聚落或许从十七世纪的明末时期就已经开始发展，堪称马来西亚最早期的华人聚落之一。
