本书之“由岛至岛”书名原启发自黄锦树教授麦田版当代小说家19的《由岛至岛》书名，“由岛至岛”的马来译文为 Dari Pulau Ke Pulau，英文译文则为From Island To Island。另，齐邦媛教授在其<序：《雨雪霏霏》与马华文学图像>评及马华著名小说家李永平教授的书写历程，齐教授的文句写道：“出生于婆罗洲，在台湾生活三十年，仍然有强烈漂泊感的李永平，从一个岛岛另一个岛，……”亦给与作者在敲定本书名时的构思。是以，笔者取前述两家的书名与观点，谕示余光中对马华作家“由岛至岛”的影响路径。

本书尝试梳理与探讨余光中（1928-2017）对马华作家于文学评论、散文及诗歌书写三方面的影响
