One of the key transformations in the modern history of Singapore and Malaysia was the process by which the Malayan Chinese came to identify more and more with Malaya, and less with China. This transformation unfolds in this study, through a detailed examination of the activities of Chinese civil organisations, and of the linkages between different concepts of identity and the political conditions, imperatives and processes of the time.

Fujio Hara is a Professor at Nanzan University, Japan, and holds a PhD in Area Studies from the University of Tokyo. He was a visiting researcher at Universiti Sains Malaysia from 1972 to 1974 and at University of Malaya from 1987 to 1989, and again from 1992 to 1994.
