In 1999, the Malaysian government launched the Code of Practice on the Prevention and Eradication of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. The Code, which is not legally binding, sought to encourage employers to address the serious problem of sexual harassment in the workplace by providing a comprehensive definition of workplace sexual harassment and setting out procedures and policies which employers should implement.
This book is based on a year-long study on the implementation of the Code in six selected companies in Malaysia conducted by the All Women's Action Society (AWAM) and the Women's Development Collective (WDC). A Pioneering Step: Sexual Harassment and the Code of Practice in Malaysia looks at issues such as the extent of sexual harassment in the six companies, definitions or perceptions of sexual harassment among employers and employers and the impact of the Code on the companies and on their staff. It is the first study to assess the Code of Practice and to attempt to identify its strengths and limitations upon implementation. In presenting recommendation and identifying good practices for dealing with sexual harassment in the workplace A Pioneering Step: Sexual Harassment and the Code of Practice in Malaysia is likely to be invaluable for anyone interested in understanding and addressing sexual harassment in Malaysia.
